Loughcrew, near Oldcastle in County Meath, is a place steeped in history, dating back at least 5,000 years when a collection of Neolithic cairns (prehistoric passage graves) were built into the surrounding hills. In the sixteenth century.

It was the heartland of the Plunkett family and Ireland’s most recent saint Saint Oliver Plunkett - until he was hung, drawn and quartered for treason in 1681. Shortly after this, the land was taken over by the Naper family, who have maintained the estate ever since.

Over the course of many generations, the 180,000 acre estate has dwindled to just 200. The original sixteenth century Loughcrew House was razed to the ground in a fire and rebuilt in 1821 by the English architect Charles Cockerell (who went onto design the Ashmoleon in Oxford ).
