Orange cars and red washing machines don't necessarily appeal to the widest audience of buyers, but there's a reason you see them featured in magazine ads, TV commercials and on the showroom floor. Manufacturers and designers believe that bright, intense colors attract interest and help consumers feel better about themselves in trying economic times -- even if they end up purchasing the white washer-dryer set after all.
"The big, hot thing ... is a craving for color: great, big, fun colors," said Josette Buisson, artistic director for Pittsburgh Paints' Voice of Color. Ms. Buisson is a color and design specialist who helps PPG Industries predict from year to year what shades of paint people want in their living rooms and which colors will help sell consumer items such as cars, computers, appliances and cell phones.
In the next few years, expect more products to turn up in bold colors, such as orange, yellow and blue, because they "bring fun back into design and life," said Ms. Buisson. "Life can be hard and we are submerged with bad news and we like to think about something fun."

Angelo Surmelis is a designer and host of HGTV's new series, Rate My Space. This weekly show is inspired by HGTV.com's popular virtual design community of the same name, where people can upload photos of their spaces and others get to rate them, as well as give advice and recommendations.
"Homeowners are seeking innovative strategies and creative ideas on how they can transform everyday rooms and ordinary areas into dramatic living spaces," said Lisa Pickell, president of the HBAGC, a council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, the event's sponsor. "Walking through these distinctively different homes can spark your ambitions and suggest colorful new concepts and inventive approaches that you can apply to your own home. There's an assortment of renovation projects on display, representing a good cross-section of styles and budgets."
The first thing to do is make sure you know what type of look you want before you begin selecting wall art or furniture. Look at interior design magazines or online stores to get some ideas. You may want to visit interior decor showrooms or new model homes, which will also give you some great ideas. When you're out shopping, you need to know what you're looking for and have a list. The more organized you are, the quicker you'll get what you want.
